It is with heavy hearts that the Sedgefield Striders announce the passing of Johannes “Hannes” van Rooyen, a cherished member of our club. Hannes passed away in hospital after an illness, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, talent, and contribution to our community.
Hannes began his journey with the Striders as a young boy, mentored by the late Willie Ward and Frankie. His natural talent and hard work quickly propelled him into the spotlight as he represented our club in race walking and running competitions. Hannes’s achievements brought pride to the Striders and elevated our club’s reputation in the athletic community.
Beyond his personal accomplishments, Hannes played a vital role in nurturing young talent, especially among athletes from Smutsville. His guidance and encouragement left a lasting impact on the lives of many aspiring runners and walkers, demonstrating his commitment to the sport and the community.
Club members fondly remember Hannes for his early promise as a rising star and his pivotal role in the club’s history. Recollections of his participation in events like the 160 km relay on Robben Island, where he contributed to a memorable victory for the walkers’ race, serve as a testament to his enduring spirit and dedication.
The passing of Hannes has deeply affected all who knew him. Messages of condolence from club members echo the sadness and respect felt for a man whose life was interwoven with the Sedgefield Striders’ journey.
Our deepest sympathies go to the Van Rooyen family, friends, and fellow club members during this difficult time. Funeral arrangements will be shared as soon as they are available.
Rest in peace, Hannes. Your legacy will forever be a part of the Striders’ story.
